Desk Mat Size Guide: Which Size Actually Fits Your Setup

Desk mats are bought by eye and regretted by centimetre. Measuring first takes two minutes and removes the most common complaint — that a mat is either swimming on the desk or hanging off the front edge.

Measure before you browse

Measure three things:

1. Usable desk width — edge to edge, minus anything permanently mounted.
2. Usable depth — front edge to the point where a monitor stand or riser begins.
3. Keyboard width — a full-size board is typically 440 mm, tenkeyless around 360 mm, 60% around 290 mm.

Your mat should cover the keyboard plus enough mouse travel for your sensitivity, while leaving a couple of centimetres of desk visible at the front and sides so the edges are not being crushed against a wall or a desk lip.

The common sizes

• 800 x 300 mm — compact desks, tenkeyless or 60% keyboards, moderate mouse sensitivity.
• 900 x 400 mm — the standard extended size. Fits a full keyboard plus comfortable low-sensitivity mouse movement. This is the safe default for most setups.
• 1200 x 600 mm and up — full-desk coverage. Looks excellent, protects the whole surface, and is worth it if your desk is 140 cm or wider.

Low sensitivity needs width, not depth

If you play at a low DPI and swing from the elbow, width is what runs out first. Most people who say their mat is too small mean it is too narrow on the mouse side, not too shallow.

Thickness

3 mm is the usual cloth mat thickness and suits most people. 4 to 5 mm adds cushioning and helps on an uneven desk, but raises the keyboard slightly, which can change wrist angle. Thicker is not automatically better.

Details that decide longevity

• Stitched edges. An unstitched mat frays at the corner within months.
• Rubber base. It should grip without leaving residue.
• Print quality. Look for fade resistance; a mat lives under a lamp and a pair of forearms.
